Emotional Intelligence

Happy Business People

Research indicates that stereotyping is the basis for prejudice, so it stands to reason that the way to eliminate prejudice is to eliminate stereotyping, right? Unfortunately, the human brain is hard-wired to stereotype. In fact, stereotyping is necessary for survival, and it is physiologically impossible to eliminate it. (A complete lack of stereotypes amounts to psychological dysfunction.) The good news is that we don't need to elimnate stereotyping in order to minimize its detrimental effects.

As you become familiar with the physiological mechanisms that produce stereotyping and other forms of emotional response, you will develop an emotional intelligence that allows you to recognize when these neural circuits are in operation. This is often referrred to as self-awareness.

Cultural competency is acheived when you learn, through understanding, to exert conscious, enlightened control over emotive processes.

By the way, an amygdala hijack happens when we fail to exert enlightened control, thereby allowing the emotive center of our brains, the amygdala, to run amok.

(How's that for a fascinating piece of trivia?)
